| Hey dudes, I debated with a rather narrow minded person recently who claimed only pre-composed material was 'real music' etc. Shawn did a lot of both, and I think his improvs were just as worthy of the term music as his composed material. I was wondering how everyone else here feels about improvisation, in any given circumstance.

| I think that improv can be very musical, and it is a very good test of a musician to be able to improv in a manner that is enjoyable. What made Shawn's improvising incredible is that he would be improvising over such complex changes... playing the kinds of things that he played flawlessly while hitting all those changes, and it sounding perfect, that's a real musician. Anyone can regurgitate pre-written music, as long as their technical ability is at the right level | | Back to top | |

I'll reiterate what I stated in that thread - it's more a test of a musician than a recital of other material no matter how complex. Improvising over the sorts of changes that Holdsworth, Shawn, Mclaughlin routinely utilise is nothing short of remarkable when you consider that beyond knowing how to do so, they also know how each note is going to sound.
